Lottery Myths Busted

1. You are more likely to be hit by a lightning bolt than winning the lottery!

Although this may be true of some lotteries for the vast majority of them it is not. In an article in Public Gaming International magazine back in 1997 it was shown that this myth is totally untrue by a doctor of physics and a lottery commissioner for Iowa Dr. Edward Stanek.

In the USA in 1996 ninety-one unfortunate people were struck by lightning and died as a result. However, 1,136 people became million dollar lottery winners, 4,520 won $100,000 or more in American lotteries.

Then there are many , many thousands of players who won over ten thousand dollars.

2. Lotteries are a way of taxing people.

Taxes are levied by governments to pay for the running of the country and to cover national debt. Lotteries on the contrary are voluntary and they are usually owned by private companies who make a profit from them.

3. The lottery is used to entice the poor to part with their money.

No company targets their product to people who can't afford to buy it!

I'm sure you read or heard about the parents or family members of famous people winning the lottery (were they poor before they won?) or even millionaires or the very wealthy winning a lottery! It is not just the poor who play and win.

4. The only people who get any benefit from playing the lottery are those lucky people who win big!

Although this is one of the most popular myths about lottos it is by far the easiest to bust.

Not only winners benefit from the lottery. For instance all the big lotteries have some kind of charity donation scheme. For example the National Lottery (UK lotto) is involved in many charity projects and national business creation projects. It also invests heavily in growing business with the whole of the UK.

Retailers who sell lottery tickets get a commission on the sale. Lotteries create jobs. Many different types of jobs are created because of the lottery even ones that may not be apparent at first glance. Advertisers get paid for lottery advertisements which helps create and sustain employment.

At the end of the day the lotto is also a game and games bring enjoyment. Is it worth a buck or two to enjoy the experience?

5. The lottery promotes compulsive gambling and is responsible for creating more gamblers.

Anyone who has personal experience of someone with an addiction knows all too well that people with addictive personalities disable certain characteristics. Almost all addictions have their foundations in mental, emotional and physical causes.

Surveys have shown that gambling addiction is not affected by the presence or the absence of the lottery. Very few compulsive gamblers are satisfied with lottery gambles and seek much more immediate and larger scale bets.
